For your next weekend trip, or week to escape the realities of life - may I suggest you have a look at tiny houses. The tiny house movement in recent years has slowly grown in significance, and it's not too surprising. The adjective describing these miniature homes belies the significance of what these dinky dwellings can offer. From similar origins to glamping, and #vanlife, the tiny house movement offers a chance to limit the complexities of life, focus on your own private space, and be truly in the moment. For the environmentally conscious, they also offer a good alternative. With good insulation, the space can be quick to heat, energy is often sustainably sourced from solar panels, and the sheer quantity of material used is far less.

But, it is not the practicalities of these small homes which is at the heart of their rapidly gaining popularity, rather the way in which they can mould and rein you in. A tiny house is unlikely to be the place of a whirring dishwasher, or electronic blinds which require a degree in engineering to operate. Instead, a tiny house offers simplicity and a chance to return to times where we didn't have a dozen things arguing for attention at all times. Watch the snow fall outside, while the coffee slowly brews on the hob. Embrace the warmth and cosiness of your private cave, surrounded by nature...

But tiny need not mean a loss of luxury. From the knowledge of being in your own private home, to the isolation your compact abode from others - this is the luxury of simplicity. Take the time to bathe in all the attention you or your partner has been missing. Forget about the complexity of everyday life, forget about the daily-grind: the meetings, the phone calls of your other life. Meaningfully connect with yourself, each other, the natural world around you. This is the ultimate treat to ourselves - a true luxury.
And so, a tiny house limits you - but these limitations are exactly what this is about. Our daily lives offer us so much, in fact, too much. We need to get away from the stuff of modern life, and back to a place of simplicity. That place is a tiny house. Try it, and you might be surprised...
